ASSIGNMENT #13 – TED Talks reflection

1.William McDonough

In my view, William McDonough architect and designer is what this world needs today. He believes in green design. He talks about a “cradle to cradle” design, with a product full life cycle. From creation to a sustainable afterlife. It inspiring to see how he wants no waste and wants to give a unlimited life to objects, buildings, cities etc in context with design. I hope this becomes the future of design. As a designer (in the making) and an active social worker back in India I feel it is very important to control waste and put a hold on pollution.

I think a lot of people are researching on it already, but I feel two such things that require cradle-to-cradel is plastic and the butts of cigarettes.

2.Suzanne Lee

Suzanne lee is a fashion designer and also a botanist who comes up with new ideas and has been experimenting as to how can clothing be designed sustainably. She shares her experiment in growing a “kombucha” based material that can be used like fabric or vegetable leather to make clothing. This was very inspiring and fascinating to me as it is a new and innovative idea but at the same time it produces various questions in ones mind.

3.Janine Benyus

Janine Benyus talks about a number of products taken from nature that are sustainable and can give great results. She makes us want to look around the world and nature so that we are able to use and make the most out of the things which already exist. To me I feel after listing to this talk is that we should first utilize what wed already have like the design or shapes that already exist instead of coming up with completely new things. It was  interesting when she talks about how to repel bacteria and how we take from nature to come up with the right way to do this.

4. Neri Oxman

Neri Oxman an architect and designer creates products that are inspired by nature and good for nature. I liked the fact that she is against plastic. It is a great way wherein carbon can be made into sugar. She is leading the search for ways in which digital fabrication technologies can interact with the biological world. It was interesting listen about the 3D printing and how they 3D printed with no seams between the cells. I feel it is great how she was able to make her own periodic table.
