Under Construction
This sculpture is a combination of four different body parts- a foot, a hand, ears and lips; without which everyday life would be impossible. Today’s society places immense pressure on young individuals to look and behave a certain way. If one doesn’t look a certain way they often face ridicule from the people around them. As a result everyone today is in a constant process of changing themselves to try to fit into the standards of beauty. Hence their bodies are always under construction in a pursuit of the ideal beauty image.
The foot was chosen as the main aspect of the sculpture as it is never mentioned when talking about beauty. The hand has been cast in a position in which the fingers are intertwined with each other and give an impression of being stuck in an uncomfortable position. They also appear to be stopped in motion- preventing the person from moving forward. The lips have been broken to show that often the one trying to change himself loses his own say in the process and the ears are highlighted to show the impact of what others say. The marks and holes on the whole piece are scars left behind by words and the changing process.
The sculpture is hence an attempt to make people appreciate their natural beauty.
