AIDS MEMORIAL: SKETCH

I really enjoyed our visit to the AIDS memorial however I did not feel like I was at a memorial that was truly recognizing the AIDS epidemic and discrimination thousands of people went through. I found the AIDS Memorial Park to almost be a park on one side and a large architectural sculpture on the other; the two did NOT feel in harmony with one another.

This sketch is an “in-process”, “one of many ideas” kind of sketch… it is not my final idea. Re-designing the memorial I decided I want to cover the entire park with red, transparent like plexiglass. Keeping the original shape of the monument but expanding it and changing the color to red, I think, will do a few things. I think this would catch people’s eye, if they are walking around in the area and see this I believe people are going to want to come see what it is and learn more about it. Red is also the worldwide color that represents AIDS awareness. I think by expanding the shape of the triangular monument it will make the park feel more a part of this monument as well as providing a covered, even shaded area for people to sit and eat in the park, workout, etc.
