- How did you choose the initial image from the #is2b2?
I chose the Chanel advertisement for many reasons. Initially I chose it because I have a huge interest in fashion and I have read two books about the house of Chanel so I thought it would be good for me to research something I have a large interest in and know a lot about. The next reason I chose this ad is because it was a fragrance advertisement and my mother works in the perfume industry. The last reason I chose this advertisement is because I thought it was horrible.
- Why did you choose to change it in the three ways you changed it?
After I chose my advertisement I did a lot of research on it and I began to realize why it was such a bad advertisement. I chose to “make fun” of the fact that the fragrance advertisement wasn’t an advertisement for fragrance; the advertisement was marketed just as a Chanel advertisement.
- When you think about your target audience/ audiences – what is one image, impression, color or thought-form that comes to mind?
When I think of the target audience for Chanel (which is what I played off of) is just anyone that can afford it (which is a very small 1% in the USA). I think of women and money when I think of Chanel.
- Did you incorporate that image (thought construct) into your work from Bridge 2?
Yes. I incorporated past advertisements from Chanel of Chanel women into my final images.
- What part of this project are you most proud?
I am most proud of everything I learned during this project. I feel like for years I have kind of bought into this idea of money and glamour but it is really just a marketing stunt. Yes there is a beauty to the fine leather goods and hand-made custom clothing and bags that they make but on the other side of that Chanel could sell a $500 bottle opener or shoe lace and people would still buy it. People only buy the Chanel fragrance because its Chanel.
