Space and Materiality – Prosthetic

For Space and Materiality:Body, the final project was to create a prosthetic the diminishes or augments the human form. My initial idea was to make a giant meat-tenderizer sleeve for tenderizing very large steaks made from cloth and metal studs. After presenting the idea, I realized it’s actually kind of gross and hellacious.

Next, I added embellishments to my initial sketch, drawing stains, growths, and discoloration onto it. My idea was to really play into the gross and somewhat disturbing idea of tenderizing a huge steak with such a gruesome instrument. To do this, I looked into the enemy designs of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Clock Tower, using the characters to inspire my work.

Another important development while I was making the project was deciding to make a hard, inner-shell at the suggestion of my teacher. I used chicken wire and plaster bandages to create a shell to attach the cloth to with thread.

Finally, I added growths, ink, and paint to the prosthetic to make it look creepy and horrific- looking, like the monsters from Silent Hill and the Barrows twins from Clock Tower.
