Space/Materiality: Exercise 1: Wire

1.Describe the general character and specific design features that led you to choose the shoe you chose to work with.

The object I chose was a stuffed narwhal that my boyfriend bought me when we visited the aquarium in Long Beach CA. I chose this object because it was interesting and I really like my stiffed animal.

  1. Reflect on what your shoe choice might say about your identity in relation to  your culture.

The narwhal might reflect on my culture because I am from California by the beach and I purchased the object at an aquarium.

  1. Describe the line quality or qualities used in your sculpture. Be specific. Discuss how you made decisions about how to use line direction/orientation, thickness, character, color, connections, etc in your design.

I wanted to show the texture of the narwhal so I made the wire uneven to represent that. I used a ticker gauge wire to show where the seams were.

  1. Discuss your strategy for employing cross contour in your sculpture.

I tried to stick to the cross contour drawing that we did; I used it as a guide. I added more lines to add structural integrity.

  1. Describe something you would do differently if you could make your sculpture again AND an aspect of your work that is particularly strong.

I would use two different types of wires that were different colors to show the different colors of the narwhal. I think that over all my wire sculpture is strong and shows the major details of the object.
