In Pursuit of Intersubjective Vistas: “Surreal Case”

I was inspired by the thought of “dissolving the wall.” I wanted to take a figurative approach with the wall and mix it with a fantasy world. From this drawing I would like to step into a tropical island where I can lounge and enjoy some time off while swimming and enjoying the sun.

Dissolving the Wall

For the second piece, I wanted to show the dream that a small child might have looking out of their bedroom window. I created a very simple room with just a window that shows the milky way as if it were just outside the child’s window.

Sited Dreams

For the third piece I really just wanted to create an abstract piece that is just fun and not serious. I started with a simple object, a teapot. I decided to put a fish in the teapot to create an abstract feeling for the piece.

The Memory Of Objects

I wanted to connect all the pieces in some way. I used water color to create the first step of all the pieces. Then I cut pieces out and added digital elements into the parts where I cut out parts of the painting. Water color is not something that I usually work with and I decided that I really enjoyed it. It is so east to manipulate and blend the colors in an effortless way.

This piece is just pencil and I used an exact knife for the cutouts.

The process is the same as above.

I used water color for this piece.

These three pieces are the mock ups that I made for the final project.

Proposal for Drawing and Imaging: Places and Things

FINAL PROJECT

“Surreal Case”

CONCEPT:

For this piece, I want to create a surreal feeling up in the clouds. I want to make an optical illusion that is inspired by M.C. Escher. The illusion will be a staircase that goes on forever. It will be a sort of story of this person that is walking around and up and down the stairs but they cannot get off. The staircase is like a journey, like a story of someone’s life. We go around and around looking for a purpose in our lives and I want this staircase to represent that.

PROCEDURE:

I am going to make a frame out of clouds that surrounds the outer edge, this will bind the edges of the piece to define the space and give the viewer a “window” to look through. Looking past the clouds is going to be a scene with an optical illusion of a never-ending staircase. The staircase will stand out against the vague landscape background.

IMAGERY:

  1. The clouds are creating a border which lends to the surreal feeling of being up in the clouds. The clouds will be fluffy like cotton candy.
  2. The staircase is never-ending so it is abstract and slightly confusing.
  3. The background is going to be a vague, desert landscape.

MATERIALS/ METHODS OF ANALOG AND DIGITAL:

I am using water color to create the clouds. I will use Illustrator to create the basic illusion of the staircase which I will print out and go over with water color and pen/ pencil to fill in and shade the steps.

COLOR APPLICATION:

I will use blue and pink for paint the clouds. These colors are reminiscent of cotton candy and will add to the surreal feeling because instead of just clouds, they will be cotton candy. Past the cotton candy clouds, will be the never-ending staircase which will be shades of purple and dark blue with splashes of yellow to compliment the purple.

REFERENCES/ SOURCES/ CITATIONS:

I am drawing inspiration from M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali. I am sourcing a piece created Erik Johansson that was inspired by M.C. Escher and was made in tribute to him.

PROGRESS:

After I finished the clouds in blue and pink I decided that I didn’t like just having two colors so I added some purple because it looked to much like a gender reveal which is not the direction that I wanted to go. After I cut out the center, I added the staircase which was a piece by Erik Johansson that was inspired by M.C. Escher. I really liked this because it is like a metaphor for life we just go up and down and around. Then I put a vague desert background that made the staircase stand out.

The final piece installed during class. It was a completely different experience seeing my work pinned up with everyone else’s like it was. It was very enjoyable and I loved hearing what the class had to say about my piece and about all the other pieces. It was a very enjoyable end to a very enjoyable class. I developed my skills both digitally and analogue in this class and I feel that this project was a perfect way to show was what I learned.
