Bridge 4: New Monument

The new monument seeks to create a more inclusive past by acknowledging the fact that Columbus did make is all the way across the ocean which is a pretty big accomplishment. But we also want to acknowledge that when he got to the new land, there were already people settled in there. The new monument seeks to acknowledge and make people aware of all the terrible things that happened to the indigenous people because of Columbus. I chose to represent the indigenous people with tall, strong trees. I took the existing statue of Columbus and took it off the tall column and placed it on a small pedestal on the ground.

The first souvenir is a pack of seeded paper with information about the new monument. The packet includes a flyer that advertises the monument, the real story of Columbus shown through pictures, and a diagram of one of Columbus’ ships. The packet comes with instruction on how to make a paper airplane as well as a paper boat.

We played with the concept of the number three so for the second souvenir, we made a three dollar bill that represents the indigenous people on the front side and the Italian Americans.

This is the brochure for the new monument that shows our new brand and what we wanted to achieve with the new monument.
