Space and Materiality: Plaster Project

For this assignment, we were asked to combine at least two body parts in a surrealist-inspired composition. My idea was to create a hand holding a pomegranate, the inside of which was a mouth. My goal was to explore the different textures that I could create with the plaster. I struggled to cast the inside of my mouth, so I eventually decided to sculpt a dummy mouth out of stoneware so that I could more easily pull it out of the alginate mold without destroying the mold. I used this same technique to cast the “pomegranate.” I feel as though I could have done a better job of connecting the mouth to the fruit. Because I was so focused on connecting the two pieces, the plaster drips make the mouth difficult to read.
