Space and Materiality: Ambulatory Device

In this piece, we were asked to create an ambulatory device. I chose to create a device that would alter one’s movements as much as possible while also being as un-invasive as possible. As a result, I created this system of straps that attached the user’s knees and arms so that they must crawl on all fours. I chose to create a piece that comments on the infantilization and sexualization of women. I embroidered the words “sweetheart” and “baby” on the piece as reference to some of the nicknames commonly used by catcallers as well as pet names we associate with babies and small children. I also embroidered a cherry blossom branch as cherry blossoms symbolize purity and chastity, as well as alluding to the phrase “popping one’s cherry.” I used canvas to create a soft structure that further reinforced the baby imagery. Had I more time, I would have liked to embroider both sides of all four panels, however, because all the embroidery is hand-done, I was only able to complete one panel.
