Scientific Method

In the lab we learned and interacted with testing water, it gave a real perspective of what is going on with clean water not only in NYC but around the world. There is something much more impactful viewing something tangible and physical then there is just reading about it. I think it resonates with you way more. Someone could point out a dirty river but until you see the tests yourself or the data its just based on spoken word. The scientific method helps put these ideas and thoughts into a organized fashion, it really opened my eyes to how even without realizing a lot of science does connect to art wether methods or styles. Below is the paper I wrote about the scientific method in science and in art along with photos from the lab.

I believe the scientific method can be found in most works, and if not it can be clear by the sign of more potential in the works. I don’t consider myself an artist but I do find myself subconsciously using the scientific method in anything I do creatively. It’s a simple base set up and process to develop your ideas in your head and make them ether visual or into words on paper. Your hypothesis is your main idea, what’re you trying to convey? What is the purpose? These ideas can either be written down or thought through in your head, personally I love flow charts to sort through my ideas and come to a general main point. Next is prediction which in other works is basically how am I going to show these ideas, is it writing? Is it visual art? A performance? A speech? Most times you can find me conveying my ideas in writing or some form of person to person communication. Even when talking face to face with someone my mind makes a list of points or topics to point out and I mentally check them off as I go through the conversation. Testing, this would be described as the drafts and attempts. No work is a one and done type of thing. It takes time and revision to fully express what you are trying to say (the main point back in your hypothesis). So as testing in science may be a lab testing in the creative world is as literal as it sounds, you are testing your ideas and ether confirming or altering based on what you produce. Lastly, we have analysis, to me this is the same as the scientific method. Everyone should reflect on their work when they are done. Whether that is reading or viewing it yourself or having a peer critique. Sometimes your intentions come off much different because you’re the only one in your head to see what you actually mean. I personally love peer reviews. Your peers opinions are just as valuable as your own and can actually make your work way stronger in the long run. A personal experience I had with this was just recently in my studio class when I had to make a visual memory map. My hypothesis was I want to represent how I personally view my memories internally but make it an external representation. My prediction was developing this idea of a physical memory box with mementos and pictures. For testing I had to collect all the materials and before even putting anything together assemble it in different ways until one was conveying exactly how my mind envisioned it. Looking back and analyzing my memory box I really appreciated it, most people in my class had very beautiful paintings and photographs while mine was more literal, a product rather than an idea. Which personality describes my own style and thought process. Which my peers seemed to agree with in our critique.
