Stereotype Meme: Practicing Visual Research – Part I of Bridge 4

“A significant proportion of victims of rape or other sexual violence incidents is male. ”

“Historically, rape was thought to be, and defined as, a crime committed solely against women. This belief is still held in some parts of the world…”

“Men who report domestic violence can face social stigma regarding their perceived lack of machismo and other denigrations of their masculinity. ”

“Rape of males is still taboo, and has a negative connotation among heterosexual and homosexual men.”

“About two in five of all victims of domestic violence are men.”

Our society still clings to the stereotype of male as being musculine and strong that domestic violence, rape and sexual assault against man are often overlooked. In many cases, the rapist is not faced with any charges due to the ignorance and disbelief of the fact that men can become vitims of rape and domestic violence. By challenging these stereotypes through memes, I want to raise awareness to this common stereotype and communicate the message that this issue should not be ignored.
