Intro To Fashion Studies: Lecture/Recitation LP Post #4

I believe this garment (made by Giorgio Armani) was included in the MoMa: Is Fashion Modern? exhibition because it was such a trend in the past, present, as well as in the future. The influence of the suit has extended over 100 years, through archetype, stereotype, and prototype.  It is also a women’s suit, which represented an important time in history in which women started to be in the workforce. This women’s suit makes one look stereotypically educated, and of high standard, raising the person from a position if they were to wear casual clothing. It opened doors towards the way women were seen, which differed from the traditional “cultural discourses which frequently provide scripts that prescribe what men and women are expected to do (or to not to do)…” (Kaiser 127). The suit, which is both worn by men and women, represent a symbol and socioeconomic standard that is still carried on to this day, and possibly will take place in the future. It is usually worn by people who are in higher positions in the job/company, and shows an almost elitist attitude towards others.  It is seen common in everyday life, however can be seen either as a restriction to self-representation or as a way to direct oneself in a certain aesthetic.
