A Game To Convince: Playtest Report

Outside of the class, I played with my father and cousin on this game.  My father believes that Virtual Reality is a viable platform for multiplayer games while my cousin believes that VR is too difficult to actually play on and that it feels very much like a “gimmick”.  We played both the analog version and the electronic version.  The analog version took them about 10 minutes while the digital version took them about 5 minutes.  The main question I was aiming to answer was whether or not the game actually was giving the faux-VR impression I was trying to provide.

Their response was simple, the analog version was rather fun, while the VR version was ok, it gave the impression that it was on VR, and it would be interesting to see on VR.  Overall, they said that the analog version was far more realized than the VR version that I created.  However, when it came to the full analog version, my dad said that he didn’t see any need for him and my cousin to collaborate.  In terms of the question, they said that the faux-VR version was ok, not great, and obviously couldn’t compare to an actual Virtual Reality Experience with funding and more than just a few weeks.  A new question I have after the playtest is how I could potentially make this actually work with a proper VR as well as how I can make it go further with the intention of fully realizing my analog version.

I showed them the fully updated VR version with the new controls and the Faux VR style headsets I made and they actively did not like it, they believed that the best version was still the original top down game.  They also said that as a multiplayer game, it was very strange and unconventional, the second player also had a strange bug to it but otherwise it worked fine.

Their biggest issue was that it didn’t feel like I was making a game to really convince them, they said that “sure, it COULD translate well to VR”, but personally, they’d rather just have it like it currently is with a 2 player splitscreen setup, they were happy it worked, but their biggest problem was that it wouldn’t really translate well to VR.  After I gave them the headsets, their comments were still somewhat the same, that perhaps if it were VR, it could work, but it seems like the game doesn’t convince me it is a VR, and that was the biggest problem I had with the entire experience.
