Reaction to “Do the Right Thing”

The fact that it costed tons of money to make a certain movie does not directly means that the movie is a good one. Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee seemed a lot like a low-budget film, but still gave me a very strong message. Although I’ve heard a lot and even learned about racial discrimination when I was in elementary and middle school, I actually had no attachment toward such issue – indeed, South Korea is very racially unified country, and almost everyone living there is Asian. It has been about few months ago that I started having attention toward the issues between race, and to me because of it, this movie felt more interesting to me.

What I especially loved about the movie was that the director made none of the races seem more superior than the other ones. The characteristics of each races were depicted so well, and at the same time, criticized so well. Also I thought that the overall characters and the conflict between them seemed a bit childish – the conflict begins with such a trivial matter, just as children’s fight, although it may end up in arson. I believe that this is what made the movie more commercial and interesting although it was written based on rather heavy topic.
