Bridge 3: REFLECTION on Research

REFLECTION

When we were told that we could choose any topic we wanted for our major research project, I instantly knew generally what I would be focusing on; gang culture in New York City. This is a topic that relates to several other systems which I am also very interested in. These other systems include the poverty system, the school system, and the minority system. I can relate to most of these systems to some extent so I thought it would be appropriate for me to focus on them as well. Being that it is the early research process, I am still unsure of what my final research question will be. However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t have many potential research questions or general questions regarding gang culture in New York City. Some questions that I’ve always personally wanted to know are: Is NYC gang activity becoming normalized again? Or is NYC gang culture turning into a whole other beast? Is there a direct correlation between gangs and education? Gangs and poverty? Gangs and minorities? These questions will eventually hopefully lead me to come up with my official research question, but before that, I gathered information from different perspectives and systems to potentially answer my more general questions. The most telling sources I came across were mostly videos or news clips. I am a big fan of secondary sources because they give away information from different systems of people. This in turn leads me to question the topic I’m researching and come up with more questions relating to it. However, my favorite source that I came across was a music video. The music video features a man rapping about his experience in a gang involving the twisted initiation ceremony of another member. This is not only a primary source, but it is also a work of art, despite how dark and upsetting the content is. Ultimately, although I do still have a lot of work and research to do, I feel like I am much closer to coming up with my final research question.
