First Year Reflection

The majority of my work is painting or digital based. I love creating watercolor paintings, especially in black and white. I very rarely use color and if I do, there are limited colors causing the painting to appear very monochromatic. My digital work is very clean and minimal. My major is communication design. I love working with both digital and hands on art. I want to combine the two together. A lot of my interests in art consists of paintings of hands and flowers. I like making my art work look realistic and also surreal. Illustrator is my favorite of the Creative Cloud applications. I like to import images and make interesting edits out of them by adding more images or text or drawing designs.

In my first semester I did a large combination of both digital and paintings. In my second semester I have done more digital work such as info graphics, and poster designs, etc. For example, in my first semester, for Integrative Studio 1, every class we were expected to bring a new painting we have done to critique in class. My Drawing and Imaging class, was where I started to do some digital work. Also, in Time: Embodied, the majority of my work was digital, whether it be a video or on illustrator. In my Time: Embodied class, I learned how to use Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere. This helped me in my current classes and helped me with previous projects in first semester. This semester, my classes do more digital work. For example, all my projects for my sustainable systems class have been info graphics. Also, my Explorations in Typography class, the project have all been done on InDesign.

One of my favorite projects I have completed was in my first semester for my Time: Embodied class. The project was Space vs Time, and the idea was to show how time and the spaces around us coincide. I took time lapse videos of busy New York streets, the high-line and other places around NYC. I later edited the video so that there was music and the clips were nicely organized together. This was one of the first times I was using Premiere Pro and ever since this project I love making little videos and clips. This I think was my most successful project for this class. The video was too large to import to this site, however, I uploaded some screenshots from the video.

Another of my most successful projects was for first semester in my Integrative Studio 1 course. This was a self transformation project where we were required to make 3 pieces that were trans formative moments in our life and then the.next week we bring on one final piece that we think is most successful and possibly a mix of all three. This was the largest painting I have ever done. It was a 4 foot x 3 foot watercolor painting. This painting was to show anxiety. It was a black watercolor painting of a hand holding a girl being trapped in a plastic bag. This is to show loss of control and the girl’s posture is to show sadness. I think this piece was most successful even tho there are still some flaws.

Lastly, my favorite piece this semester is my final for my typography class. The project is called Typography 360. We are asked to mix typography with another form of design such as fashion, photography, painting, etc. I am making an 18″ x 24″ watercolor painting of a rose and the typography aspect is that I am going to put the word “ROSÉ” over the rose. I am still in tbe process of finishing and adding last minute touches, however, I think this is a successful project because the piece so far looks as if it can be a poster or an ad even though it is a watercolor painting. I am very proud f this so far, even though it is not complete.

In my first year here at Parsons has been very successful and I have learned so much. I have learned how to efficiently use Creative Cloud applications and also have improved my painting and drawing skills. I have gained new interests as well such as making videos and editing. I have also learned how to articulate my thoughts and views on my art. I also learned how to depict and critique my art and others. Next semester I am taking a coding class and I am excited to learn how to code. I am also excited to be going into my major now for Communication Design and learning how to better portray messages through design.
