Paint Brush

A paintbrush is most well known as a wooden stick with some hairs on one end of it. Materials of the brush hair consist of badger hair – better for oil, camel hair – good for lettering, tempera and watercolor, hog bristle – better for acrylic and oil, mongoose hair – better for acrylic and oil, kolinsky sable – good for oil and watercolor, ox hair – good for lettering and watercolor, pony hair – better with acrylic, tempera and watercolor, red sable – good for oil and watercolor, sabeline –  better for lettering and watercolor, squirrel hair –  better for lettering and watercolor, and synthetic hair which is good for all mediums. Brush sizes can also vary in shape and size. The different types of brush hairs create different textures when used with certain paints. The length of a paint brush can range from the length of your finger to the length of your arm, however, the width remains to be relatively thin. The brush part of the paint brush remain usually in neutral colors, depending on what hair the bristles are made of, however, the stem of the paint brush can come in all colors and shades. The material of the stem is usually plastic, wood and sometimes glass.

Does the stem of the brush change the way the stroke of the paint appears? For example, if you are holding a thinner stemmed brush, is it easier to control where the brush goes? Why do certain bristles work better with certain paints? Is the reasoning behind this because the thicker the paint, the better the paint sticks to a thicker bristle?  How do different brands that make paint brushes, make certain bristles better than other brands if they are made of the same materials?
