- Jean Paul Gaultier is a French haute couture and prêt-tâ-porter designer. He was born in 1952 in Arcueil in France and grew up in the suburbs of Paris. He has never attended fashion design schools. However, he sent his sketches to couture stylists at an early age, and Pierre Cardin hired him as an assistant in 1970. Six years later, he released his first individual collection. He became famous as the enfant terrible of French fashion with his particular and unique style. Gaultier was the creative director of Hermes from 2003 to 2010. During working at Hermes, he released his A/W collection in 2008 inspired by cages, frames, corsets, crinolines, nature, and equestrian style. Gaultier stated “I like to look at things from unusual perspective and question what’s expected.”
