Final Artist/Designer Statement

I like the paradoxical concept of fashion: fashion is an object of desire, but clothes, which is the biggest element of fashion, is a utilitarian object in human lives.  Additionally, fashion and clothing are comprehensive intermediation which diverse aspects in it: fabric, fiber, materials, labor, distribution channels, ideas, technique, construction, traditions, history, etc.  Therefore, fashion represents the time and space we live in.  Fashion has evolved as a result of lifestyle changes, historical incidents, and environmental changes.  While fashion has evolved with human beings, it helps people to protects their roots and identities.  It cherishes not only one’s characteristics but also one ethnic group’s characteristics and roots.  To design clothing, I must research when, where, and why people dress, and my accomplishments in ARS help me to find connections between the paradoxical concept of fashion and my design.  Research is an inevitable element for creating something new.  These complicated relationships between time, space, people and fashion inspire and compel me to design.  When I design, Because I like seeing geometry and textures on clothes, so I love to make them by myself on my clothing.  I like to have a paradoxical design features on my clothing, such as using tailoring technique and unique construction/deconstruction on my clothes. I would say I inspired by Da Vinci’s accurate work and Picasso’s conceptual work.  Details are significant on my work and many times; I attempt to deliver some meanings through them. Fashion is not a simple component in our lives, and this is why I love fashion.

 

• What, from your Final Research Paper, will you bring into your thesis year?

although I don’t think I am going to bring my research and topic from ARS class to my thesis next year, writing the academic paper helped me to develop my research skill and this also help me to design clothing better.
