PROJECT 1, Part 1: Self-Identity: What Makes you…”YOU”?

Design

If you could see how my brain works, you would notice that my thinking process is working on visuals.  I am not good at mathematics or economics.  I even feel when I learn a language, I memorize vocabulary as the shape of letters.  My left hemisphere might not be developed as much as my right one; in other words, a design is significant to me to perceive everything around me.  The great graphic designer, Paul Rand said, “Everything is Design, Everything!”  I see eye to eye with him and I would like to add, everything is design and design is everything because design bridges the gap between imagination and reality.  It also considers function.  The design stands for imaginability, physicality, and functionality.  I am a person who believes design is an unparalleled element in human lives and dreams to invent unprecedented designs in the fashion field.

Clothing

Fabric

These two elements are what I am crazy about.  They led me into Parsons.  Studying fashion is fascinating because I believe there is no other study that learns about the human body in an artistic way.  Well-made clothing is an art-piece and people can feel it with their skin.  These masterpieces do not stay hanging on the wall like paintings.  They move and live with people.  Fashion represents culture, history, mood, economy, and values in which it belongs to.  I am a person who thinks that she is lucky to study fashion, admires great designers, and desires to be involved in the field of fashion as a designer and an artist.

Movements

Although still pictures capture extraordinary images, such as Irving Penn’s photographs, I prefer moving images to still images.  Likewise, I believe the way of fabrics moving when they were on a human’s body is essential to complete styles.  It also stimulates me to focus on the clothing.

The mood and music of Paris in the 1920s

The things that attract me a lot, and they inspire me a lot.

My goal in fall 2017

As I mentioned in the first class, my concern is that I like almost all the style in fashion.  I do not mean my preferences are changeable as trends.  Literally, I like various styles at the same time; therefore, my closet and my brain are almost exploded.  One day, I like minimalism such as Marni or Jill Sander, and another day, I like feminism such as Chanel or Dior. I am always attracted by unconventional styles like Vetement or Rick Owens, and I like the eccentric ideas of Alexander McQueen and Maison Margiela.  I like the basic but noble style of Ralph Lauren and Brunello Cuccinelli.  Avant-garde style, like Comme des Garcons and Vivienne Westwood, are on my list as well.  Delicate laces and exceptional embroidered fabrics, such as Valentino, and the dramatic drapes of Lanvin make me feel so excited.  However, as a sophomore now, I think I should discover what I want most.  I expect to narrow my style throughout this semester.

This is me.

My memories and thoughts in my room.

I remember the red moon in 2014 which was the year I started to live in NYC.

My motivation is to experiment and explore various materials.

I used fabric to express my memories and thoughts on this painting.

This is a box which has kinds of stuff that represent me. What I like, what I think, and I care about.

These words and images inspire me, and I like the music from the 1930s in Paris.
