Fashion is Fair
The images above are from my last project and my statement was fashion should be fair for everyone. To show fairness, my clothing was inspired by the gender unified martial arts clothing. People tend to have a strict stigma for men, and they expect some specific (usually strong and powerful) images to men. It causes that men have more limited choices for fashion and garments. On the other hand, women have more options for choosing their clothing and have gotten more generosity from society; however, this is not considered as a positive aspect in my project because people have a tendency to see senses of beauty, vulnerability, or sexiness on women’s bodies. According to the book Fashion and Cultural Studies, the critical art theorist John Berger mentioned that “Men act and women appear.” Is this an absolute truth? Feminist theorist Simone de Beauvoir wrote that “One is born a female, but become a woman.” The author of the book also mentioned “…for individuals who are born male or, more accurately, who are assigned the male gender. Yet in the case of males, it is a certain kind of clothing, rather than fashion as a social process, that is what makes him a man. We seem not to figure out the biological determinism and social constructionism; therefore, we have made biases and treated ourselves unfairly. Strangeness is not only associated with masculinity; in other words, beautifulness is not only a companion of femininity, because fashion is fair.
