Bridge #3: Grand Central Terminal

4057

Final Draft.

At Grand Central Terminal, a few people are waiting for the train 4057 at a departure platform.  Kelly is standing on this platform with her son.  4057 is an exceptional train at Grand Central Terminal.  It operates once a year.  The passengers of 4057 have much more baggage than other passengers or have nothing in their hands.  No one knows exactly about the destination of 4057 because no one has come back from there.  4057 is called Utopian Train. Since the particular destination has a distinct purpose, the people at this platform are somewhat different with the people at ordinary platforms.  The mood of the platform is usually hopeful, but also there are a few people who exude a pessimistic mood.  All of them are anxious for sure.  The passengers of 4057 have various reasons for leaving.  Most of them want to take the special train to reach utopia in order to escape their severe reality.  They believe there is something special such as their dream, inspiration, their family or friends who already passed away, and a better or ideal life.  For them, Utopia is literally a “shining city on the hill”.

Kelly lost her husband in a car accident six months ago.  They were married for 12 years.  She met her husband when she was a 15-year-old.  She always thought it was so lucky to get married to her first love.  They loved each other.  She missed him so much and sometimes she considers going to Utopia because she believes she will find her husband there, though she hasn’t decided to take the special train.  She prefers to be down to earth than a daydreamer.  She chose to go to Utopia because of her son.  Her 10-year-old son has a strange disease.  Her son, Joshua occasionally loses his sight.  He loses his sight as soon as he feels an extreme headache.  The pain continues roughly six hours.  Joshua has borne the pain well, but Kelly feels her heart ache when Joshua is in pain.  He has had this bizarre illness has been since he was seven years old.  After several of agony over the past three years, she is determined to bring her son to Utopia to cure him.

Ted live in Brooklyn with his girlfriend.  He used to work at an electronic device store.  He quit the job to take the utopian train.  He had grown sick of his daily routine and he had become fed up with his work.  These were the reasons for taking the train; however, primary motive was an existential sadness.  Like the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, he believed that the current society was hell for him.  We are obliged to live with others views and expectations.  People tend to play a role for their surroundings.  Ted aspires to find his identity and he believed that he can find it in Utopia.  His girlfriend, Sara followed him to heading Utopia.  She never realized her ambition of becoming a professional singer songwriter.  She doesn’t have a bridge between her ability and reality.  In reality she was a waitress.  Although she had to work 12 hours a day, she got paid peanuts for doing that job.  She wanted to work doing something she cares about, but she didn’t know what that could be. She just wanted to stop working. She is fatigued.

Ted and Sara are not together now.  He is the only person who came back from Utopia.  No one knows how he came back, how long he stayed there, why his girlfriend did not come together.  Most people among him do not know he took the utopian train.  Kelly’s husband and Ted were best friends.  He hasn’t seen Kelly and Joshua since his best friend died, he sent a present to Joshua as a Christmas gift.  Ted knows Joshua’s disease and always feels sorry for him. He unexpectedly heard Kelly and Joshua were going to board 4057 and he is on his way to Grand Central Terminal to stop them.  He knows how he had lost his girlfriend.  He doesn’t believe the therapeutic utopian strategy.  It will not be a remedy for Joshua.

He arrives at Grand Central Terminal.  He sees Kelly and Joshua and they are just about to get on the train 4057.  He runs and shouts.  There is the Venous de Milo in his mind.  Utopia always reminds him of the beautiful sculpture which people believe is perfect.  People tend to think something is beautiful when they see it from far away.  They think Utopia is perfect like the Venus de Milo.  The truth is it is not.  It is not perfect and has many cracks and scratches.  After coming back from Utopia, he believes that there is no perfection in the world.  He has realized how beauty is defined.  Beauty is possible because it is not perfect.

His return was impossible.  No one can come back from the seventh heaven because the utopian train never stops.  It cannot stop because Utopia is a place that is perfect, but doesn’t exist. Utopia is the apotheosis of a place of idealistic day dreamers.  They live on the train with hope of Utopia and the hope is going to be changed to nostalgia, because before long they feel and realize that their eternal life is on the 4057.  He runs and shouts to stop them.

For this bridge project, I also made suitcases based on the interview.
