The Norms

“The Norms” is a textile piece created to reflect on the lack of independence and own characteristics when people portrait themselves on social media. Social media such as Instagram is a platform for individuals to express themselves. However, recently there are many who lost their own characteristics to make their profile appeal to more people. “The Norms” is six pannels of different fabrics connected together and covered with the same type of yarn, reflecting on the fact that people are different under this fake ideal profile. To create this piece, I used a total of six different types of fabric, and two types of yarn that were all gathered around the school. About two thousand strands of the light color yarn were cut at the same length and sewn on to the six pieces of fabrics, while bunch and sections of the darker yarn were also added in. After putting the six pieces of fabrics with yarn together, the darker yarn were sewn down on the open bottom to create a difference in texture and consistency. For the panels that did not have darker yarn, groups of light color yarn were braided to create more variety, reflecting on the unnoticeable differences that these Instagram profiles have.
