ASSIGNMENT #9 – Foam board (Planar) 3D Structure

Part 1

David Smith

Alexander Calder

Donald Judd

Anthony Caro

Charles Ginnevere

Richard Sweeney

research description

From the research, I can find design made with different shapes with a variety of material. From Alexander Calder’s artwork, I can see small pieces combine and make one big sculpture. Then I can see minimalism from work. Donal Judd works like more neat and simple architectural design. Anthony Caro works were fun. Variety lines of design element give me rhythmical feelings. My favorite artwork from the research was Richard Sweeney. Her works made by one tone of color but it is very geometrical. Also, the flow of the work inspires me a lot of object such as waive from the ocean, flowers, etc. From this research, I can find out many different shapes and the art design from the artwork.

Part 2

Description

With a blank paper, we are creating self-standing variety sculptures. We are using OLFA knife for cutting the paper and using staplers to attach the design.

Reflection

First of all, this stage was exciting. I learn how to blank paper transform into many different designs. Also, with a variety of view per design show different look and mood. Little bit challenge part was using a stapler. When I was trying to use staplers for few pieces first time, when I try to use staplers it the paper crooked. Therefore, I use masking tape for the connect the part. If I do this assignment again, maybe I can find a different mechanical connector for the part.

Part 3

Description

Using a foam board to create the self-standing structure without using a mechanical connector. Using two types of knife for cutting the foam board.

Reflection

I went to the Metropolitan Museum last week searching and observe the artwork from Studio lecture. When I get there the wild boar helmet from Africa, it inspired me to create this structure. I start to research the wild boar at the first time about the appearance. However, I begin to change my mind that wants to express the moment because it can be more challenging for myself. Therefore, I imagine the wild boar fighting against each other which is a dynamic, nervous and angry moment. I try to cut the foam board with wild boar teeth and connect them. While I am making this progress, I thought the way of joint the foam board without mechanical connector inspire me the wild boar biting each other. The only challenge was I try to reuse the foam board last time which was very thick, so it was tough to cut.
