PROJECT#3- Social-Ecological Space – Social Space

For the peer project, we had to decide the concept of the project. For a few days of class, we were researching what kind of idea we want to progress and develop. One of our group members brought up to the concept about the mind that the idea was every person have darkness in their inner self. First, our decision about our project was, making a two side of the room that has a lot of contrast. One can be light mood, and the other was the dark mood. Likewise, by our art installation, people can see the contrast for compare inner self and appearance. However, we had a little challenge to make the connection between the detail concept of the human mind. First time when we had a meeting to discuss the detail concept, every each peer came up with a different concept. After the first meeting, we decide the concept of the mental illness. Researching about mental illness was kind of interesting to learn. There are lots of mental illness that many people do not know, same as I did. The most interesting concept for research and my inspiration came from for the project was multiple personalities also called dissociative disorder.

One of my favorite movie ‘Split’ also inspired from the multiple personality disease. The movie about the guy who is suffering from multiple personality disease kidnapped a teenage girl. While his criminal act his personality keeps changing. James McAvoy acts various characters in the movie. While I am researching about the movie, I found the film inspired by a real person. His name is Billy Milligan. Billy Milligan was born in 1955. He was grown under not good environment family. He abused by his stepfather. While he grew up his mind had been segmentation. Then his mind started to split different personality. In 1977, Billy got caught by the police because of his criminal activities. When caught by police everyone thought he was acting for denying the crime. He went to prison a few times and had to consult mental health. The first time, Dr. Willis C. Driscol diagnosis him has schizophrenia. However, Dorothy Turner who is psychologist diagnosis him as multiple personalities. His multiple characters came from the different country, age, gender, name, etc. He had 24 different personalities. Billy Milligan who was the original personality woke up in the jail. When the personality woke up, he cannot remember anything and committed suicide. At the future, Billy has been acquitted. Lots of movies, comics, etc. had inspired Billy Milligan’s multiple personalities.

I did lots of research about how I can see multiple personality concept to my light project. From the movie Split, one of personality explains in their mind. He said that their ego came out to appearance when one person gets light on the chair which is very interesting and possible to make a connection with lighting and multiple personality concept. I focus the keyword which is ‘multiple personalities,’ ‘ mind cracking,’ ‘domination’ and ‘Own personality.’ , I try to focus the light bulb as one appearance of a personality. A light bulb has been unraveled as the ego that dominates the body which Billy Milligan initially has. I was thinking of using two light bulb. One is broken, and the other is real light as the other personality try to dominate it. The most consider was the way to show multiple characters. I was trying to think to use the material to show the variety. It was little challenge to found out the material because I wanted to push myself as using all the recycled material. Likewise, I plan to use the fabric, cardboard, papers, etc. that possible to get from the recycle. Also, I decided to destroy the material to express the mind cracks.

My mood board is about how the fabric and the other recycled material can be made out damaged. Then I wanted to make my design as a brain shape.

Sketches

I try to sketches a few brain shape that I want to make and detail about how each piece looks like. Also, at first time we did not decide the exact model at the first time, I was trying to make the stool for set my piece. However, Megah designed the chair that possible to place my work. During this process, my design slightly changed.
