Diptychs: The Destruction of the Enviroment

I based my diptychs off of Monet’s Water Lilies.

“Obvious nature/environmental reference through flow and use of found objects such as leaves seems like damage/chaos related” -Léo Clement Dubois
What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

The left diptych represents clean water and the right represents an oil spill.

How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

I used acrylic paint to depict the colors and chaos. The dried mint leaves represent floating branches/leaves so that it is more clear that the painting are rooted in nature.

How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

The pieces are made of the same medium, but the difference in color changes the meaning. The colors of the left is more serene while the colors on the right are more hectic.

What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

I learned that oil spills are beautiful and that horrifies me.

How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

The left diptych is directly based off of “Water Lilies”, however, the right diptych is an interpretation. It answers the question, “What if oil was spilled into Monet’s pond?”

What websites / books / museums / galleries / other artists did you research during this process for ideas and inspiration?

I was mainly inspired by Monet’s paintings and the BP Oil Spill of 2010. I looked up images of oil to recreate the colors.

What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

The left diptych is a positive image of plastic that is a popular icon while the right one is an unfamiliar image.

How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

I used plastic to represent the pollution that’s infesting water sources.

How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

Plastic is found everywhere in today’s society and is celebrated for its durability, however, because it isn’t biodegradable, it harms wildlife on land and in water. The cuts in the right diptych represent fish gills; the plastic suffocates the gills.

What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

I learned that capitalism is scum and 🙂 should be 🙁

How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

The painting “Water Lilies”  is actually an idyllic depiction of a body of water. It’s the before image

What websites / books / museums / galleries / other artists did you research during this process for ideas and inspiration?

I was inspired by the trash on my floor.
