The Popularity of Female Yuppie Style and its Culture Reflection

The image I chose is a typical outfit of female yuppies, which was a product of feminism in the 1980s. In this essay, I will firstly discuss the culture background of this dressing style, introduce the major features of female-yuppie’s design and two typical designers in the second and third part and finally discuss the cultural reflection of the designs.

Culture Background

YUPPIE, is a nickname for YUP, which is an abbreviation of “young, urban and professional.” This word came from an unofficial definition of a group of people who lived a fashionable and distinctive lifestyle in the 1980s, which required extravagant consumption like fancy cars and expensive drinks. Typically, Yuppies lived a single life without partners or kids and had a decent career like lawyers or financiers who earned high salaries. Based on their social status and pursuit, they tended to pay attention to dressing luxuriously.

Major Features of Female-yuppie Design

the birth of female-yuppie dressing style was a result of the birth of feminism. As a result, female-yuppie designs tended to add some characteristics of male dress to female clothes in order to show the power of females. For instance, the typical outfits of female-yuppie design always contained big and tough shoulder pads. These shoulder pads designed for female business suits were very large and tough and these paddings made the shoulder of women appear as broad and strong as a male. This feature illustrates the power and independence of females.
