REBAG Project Documentation

For the REBAG Project, we must create our own customized bags out of used plastic bags we gathered or used during the weeks here at Parsons.

This is my original plan for what my design would look like. I made some changes as I was actually creating the product. Since the primary usage of this bag would be to carry the mud balls for our next project, I must design the base to have a length of 14 inches, a width of 9 inches, and a height of 4 inches. Our instructions were that we had to use the entire plastic bag, and the whole product must be 75% plastic bags.

My materials:

  • 1 Blicks Art store plastic bag
  • Old elastic band from old clothing
  • Scissors for cutting
  • Clear tape for holding components together
  • 2 sets of single use chopsticks
  • 1 old catalog

Process:

  • Cut off the handles of the plastic bag
  • Poke holes around the rim of the top of the bag using the scissors
  • Insert one end of the waist band through the holes around the top to form an inside one outside one pattern
  • Tie the two ends of the waist band into a simple knot
  • Place the 4 chopsticks at the bottom to give the bag a stable base
  • Tape down the chopsticks so that they don’t slip off
  • Place and tape down the catalog on the base of the bag to reinforce the bottom
  • Using the cut up handles of the big plastic bag, using tape, create 2 small pockets inside the bag, at the middle
  • Check to see if the bag can open by stretching and shut by pulling – Check
  • Check to see if the bag can be crushed in shape and fit inside a backpack – Check

Final Product:

The bag is able to be fitted inside a backpack with its flexibility and ability to change in shape thanks to my use of a single layer of strong plastic bag. The opening is able to be stretched open and closed using the two ends of the waist band.
