Museum of the City of New York

The piece in which I have chosen is titled “Among the last residents, African-American boy standing in rubble, his “neighborhood,” with abandoned buildings in the background.” I chose this piece because I found this photograph both visually and emotionally impacting, in that this little African-American boy has appeared to have such expressions that would usually be seen on an adult’s face. The background and environment in which he is in also adds on to the impact.

10 noted details:
The photography is black and white.
The little boy is standing in the centre of the photograph.
The little boy is alone, and he is the centre of focus in this piece.
The little boy is very young, he looks only about around five years old.

The little boy has facial expressions which reveal his annoyance and helplessness.
The little boy’s mouth is open, he seems to be speaking.
The bottom of the buildings create a horizontal line across the composition of this piece.
The background suggests that the environment has been in ruins and that it is full of waste.
There are no people in the background, and the buildings seem to be abandoned.
