Artifact–Washington Park

The assignment is to make an artifact from existing objects and put our own stories into that artifact. Our group—Kate, Hyein, Simone and me—chose the Washington Park as a site to start our story. We went there several times to get inspirations to record the sounds, interview the visitors and draw some sketches. Our brainstorming starts from a pigeon man to many coffee cups on the ground, and finally we decided to make an artifact with the iconic structure of Washington Park, the arch. We researched lots of information about the arch like its history, the Washington sculpture nearby, the interior stairs, etc. So, after that, we think about many things about how to make the story and the artifact fit with each other. And we chose a flower pattern from the ceiling on the arch. We decided to make our artifact look like a historical relic lying underground for so long, and some day, bunch of archeologists find it and then the story begins. The story is based on an emerald stone inside that broken piece of arch.

Our artifact is named the Heart of the arch, which is related to the title of our story, the emerald, because the emerald in that piece of arch. In our story, the emerald is the key to save the world, so it can be considered as a heart in the arch.

I really like our project because every group mate makes lots of efforts on it. We discussed a lot about the artifact we were going to make and the plots of the story. Also, when we were making the sculpture, everyone focuses on parts they were assigned to finish without any excuses. I love to be in such a great group. My groupmates are really helpful and friendly. Even though out sculpture seemed difficult to make at the beginning, we really try to make it with measurements and observation of details.
