Week 2: Practices for the Anthropocene

1) Read the following article, “Short Answers to Hard Questions About Climate Change”  (Links to an external site.)and write a response describing which question surprised you the most. What other, new information did you learn? Do you feel encouraged by this article? How aware do you think your friends and family are of this information?

The most surprising answer for me is eating less meat especially beef can help slow the bad influence on climate. I used to think that climate change is mainly because humans have made many technic and artificial products. I would never think about the natural eating diet could bring big influence on Climate as well. Also, this beef problem reminds me an article I read several days ago saying that feeding cows a pink seaweed called asparagopsis taxiformis can help reduce the methane which is often emitted from cows.[1]It makes me feel like the delicious beef is not as delicious as before anymore.

The other new information I learned from this article is that people, who do not believe climate change, are because of their selfness of making money. In the past, I cannot understand why people do not believe the global warming with so much direct scientific evidence, but now I learned that those people want to get their personal benefits instead of caring about the living earth. Especially for Brazil, Amazon forest is such a great natural area that plays an important role on earth, but the governments still let people cut down the trees there to produce more profits to country’s economy. The Amazon fire which happened few weeks ago is also a huge loss of the earth.

Yes, I do feel encouraged after reading the articles. Even though the final results from the climate change might not influence our current generations, I still would like to use my little power to help our future by consuming less meat and taking more public transportations. However, my family might not be really aware about climate change, but I would like to share what I learned with them.

2)  Write a short description of the Anthropocene that you would share with a close friend (using your own words/language to explain, not an internet definition). Images are encouraged.

Anthropocene is an era that humans’ activities and development cause huge effect on the earth which includes climate and environment change, etc.

3)  Given these readings and our discussion in-class, what skills and practices do you think might be useful for meeting the realities of the Great Acceleration and Anthropocene? What kinds of skills or practices would *you* like to developas an artist/designer given these realities?

For facing the realities of the Great Acceleration and Anthropocene, I will try to eat less meat especially beef, and use more green power like electricity and water. For my future artworks, I would like to try use fewer plastic materials for handmade projects. I might try to think more about the nature as my original inspirations and ideas or bring more natural elements to my work.

4) Research an artist or designer that you admire who has made a practice of daily life into art or a creative process. Post a link to an example of their work on your LP and come to class prepared to discuss.
