The Vessel Study

For the last project of Space/Materiality, we are going to study the stairs/structure of the Vessel in Hudson Yard and make a model of personal experience interacting with the Vessel.

“My experience of the Vessel” Model

My experience of walking up the Vessel is kinda shaky. I had been up there twice. I think I experienced the shakiness both time, especially when the wind blows through. The higher level I went, the stronger sense of shakiness I can feel. Looking at its structure, it is made of unstable structures, quadrilateral. There is no apparent triangular support. No wonder I can feel the shakiness. The handrail is also made of glass, which makes the viewers feel unsafe. Therefore, I made a model to exaggerate the shakiness. I made some people using copper wire and hang them on the edge of the handrail to show some viewers’ fear of height.

My other opinion is that building the Vessel is not very environmentally friendly. They ship the parts from London, which create a lot of carbon footprint. The copper material that they use is also not durable. The copper would eventually turn green, which might create a new look, but lose its original aesthetics. Using bamboo toothpicks, I tried to remind people that people can still use environmental-friendly material to build the Vessel.
