Tree!

In Space/Materiality class, we had our first wood-working class. Our first wood-working project is to turn lumber back to its tree of different years. Because it is a community-themed class, each one of us gets a chunk of the lumber, working individually and at the end, we will put it back together.

The first step it to record our original lumber.

I got the C1 lumber.

Here is the picture of this normal lumber.

Nothing special. It is just a block of wood.

And there is the original tree.

And the carving starts!

Video of my process (The video is too big to upload at the site.)

Branches are painful!

Still, a long way to go.

The most satisfying moment.

The most tragic moment!!!! I tried to save these twin branches for so long, but one of them still fell off near the end.

Sanding

The tree looks very clean before I wet it.

Here is the final result!

Because I wet my tree, the metal fiber went into the wood. It looks kind of grey and there are many disgusting black dots.

In order to save it, I sand it twice to get a very smooth and shiny surface, but there is some area I could not save.

Tree vs.  Wood

Here is the drawing of the tree

Before vs. After

These twin branches were the most challenging part of all my 20+ branches. (Yes I have a lot of small branches) I tried my best to save them, but one of them broke off when I used the power tool to get between them 🙁

Here is our large tree!!! Find which is mine!
