Intro to Fashion Studies – Post #1 (Christopher Breward’s aphorisms)

LP Post #1 [Forward  by Christopher Breward]

Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his Foreword to Fashion Studies are somewhat agreeable and disagreeable. Out of the ten aphorisms in the novel, the two aphorisms that I chose is “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories relived and futures foretold”, and “Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.” For the first aphorism, I agree and somewhat disagree with his thoughts. I admit that when the designer or the creator begins his or her work, “fashion” is personal. The theme and the design of fashion comes from the designer’s beliefs, thoughts, interests, etc; however in the conclusion, the final work needs to please the consumers, which defines that fashion is not only about being personal. The outcome of the work needs to grab the consumer’s interests. Although the product that the designer or the creator created can be personal, the consumer needs to feel and understand the message that the artists is trying to convey. For the second aphorism boy Christopher Breward, I do agree with his thoughts, because the word “fashion” is extremely vague. Fashion is difficult to exactly define, and to each individual, it can define differently. To someone, the word fashion can define that something is wearable, but to others, the word can be completely different. As Breward said, the word demands and questions us what it means to us as a person, but especially as a designer.
