Intro to Fashion Studies – Post #3 (Dress Practice Interview Reflection)

LP Post #3 [Dress Practice Interview Reflection]

From the interview, I have realized that entering someone’s closet define stepping into someone’s personal space. Through observation, it is apparent that the viewer could easily identify the owner’s identity, characteristic, personality, etc, but also I realize how different and unique each individual is. My interviewee and I have some practices that are similar, but also completely different. I noticed through the interview that our culture, background, nationality, etc affects and influences us greatly in our daily lives, which in this case is organizing our closets. For example, my interviewee organizes her garments and her accessories by colors mostly because of the subtle differences of weather in California. She did not focus much on arranging her wardrobe based on the type of clothes because it is relatively warm throughout the year in California. However, I arrange my belongings based on the type of clothing. Since I lived in New York for quite some time, I mainly organize my closet based on seasonal clothing because New York experiences seasonal temperature changes. However, we are both well-organized and categorize our wardrobe in an orderly fashion way, because we share the same culture. Coming from the same culture does not define that all Koreans are neat or well-organized; however, our culture is dependent on a phrase or an expression “pali-pali” which means quickly or in an English phrase “chop-chop”. Because Koreans are deeply soaked into their culture, we try to avoid anything from restraining our fast paced moving lifestyle, which is the reason why me and my interviewee’s closets are organized and well-sorted out. As it states in the book, it says that “the importance of focusing on the cultural practices …produces identity”(Kaiser 2012, 232), which means that our culture shapes who we are as individuals. Through the interview, I have understood that our clothing shows an overall identity and the cultural aspect of that person, but also it shows the person’s interests and taste of style.
