Robert Smithson’s ‘Spiral Jetty” (1970)

Step 1. Idea Information

Idea: He wanted to make an art in landscape.

Question: What did he want to create?

Assumption: He might want to create something on the landscape.

Step 2. Research/Observation

  • arrived the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake
  • realized there is the reddish coloration in the lake
  • realized the growth pattern of the crystal
  • thought that it is like spinning

Step 3. Sketch

  • planned to include black basalt rock and earth

Step 4. Starting Work

  • had partnerships with two organizations: the Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College (GSLI) and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA)
  • used a huge amount of materials: black basket rock and earth
  • took six days to work

Step 5. Finalizing Work

  • donated it to Dia Art Foundation
