Robert Smithson’s ‘Spiral Jetty” (1970)
Step 1. Idea Information
Idea: He wanted to make an art in landscape.
Question: What did he want to create?
Assumption: He might want to create something on the landscape.
Step 2. Research/Observation
- arrived the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake
- realized there is the reddish coloration in the lake
- realized the growth pattern of the crystal
- thought that it is like spinning
Step 3. Sketch
- planned to include black basalt rock and earth
Step 4. Starting Work
- had partnerships with two organizations: the Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College (GSLI) and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA)
- used a huge amount of materials: black basket rock and earth
- took six days to work
Step 5. Finalizing Work
- donated it to Dia Art Foundation
