Space + Materiality: Project 1 – Body Hybrid: Ear Shattering

The main concept for this project was to find a way to show how words can hurt just as much as actions.  I casted the hands by using my own hands and casting them one at a time.  However for the ears I bought a cheap halloween mask made of silicon that had ears and cast those.  I wanted the contrast between the white hands, black background, and red ears to be very contrasting.  The hands were cast in a way to look as if they are covering or cupping the ears to keep the person from listening.  I purposefully made the ears bright red to represent different emotions words can bring on such as love, anger, embarrassment.  I also used the small pieces of plaster that fell of the hands to cascade them down sort of as a way to show how words can also fade and disappear so fast because of the nature of todays society and always talking.  As a whole I feel the project turned out well and I am happy with how the colors work together.  I also am pleased with how well the hands casted.  I enjoyed the project because I had never cast before but I found a place in my heart for it and hope to cast more in the future.
