Int. Seminar 2: Visual Culture – Symbolic Ecology

My collection process for the primary sources needed was based purely around if when I looked at the image a nostalgic memory came to mind.  Personally as a young adult growing up in a world full of social media I don’t take very many “instagram worthy” pictures like many other young adults in my environment.  By living in such an urban area and especially in the city known as “The Big Apple” there are pictures being taken left and right. The reality of social media we are currently in is constructed from “celebrities” posting photos trying to make themselves look like they are living a lavish lifestyle. The only time I ever take “instagram worthy” photographs is when I am with friends but even during that situation I am hesitant.

Many of my photographs throughout my whole camera roll reflect happy moments that happened during my day whether it be with friends, family, or even by myself.  Combined in that genre of photographs are my traveling photos.  I’ve had the privilege of being able to travel across the world to places such as Korea, Thailand, Norway, etc.  Whenever I am in a new location I will take pictures to try and capture the feeling of bliss I get on vacation.

An observation that hadn’t occurred to me before looking through my camera roll was how many miscellaneous photographs of animals on my phone no matter the species.  Animals have always brought me joy and it is reflected in my many photographs of things from caterpillars in Korea or monkeys in Thailand.  Relating back to the formula I used to select my photographs many of them are linked to pleasant memories.
