Integrative Studio 2: Visual Culture – Observation as Conservation

For my art piece I chose a Dorothea Rockburne piece in the University Centers named

Two Angels, 100 Years.  Dorothea Rockburne was born in Montreal, Canada in 1932 and attended the Montreal Museum School, Montreal as well as Black Mountain College, Ashville.  During her time at Black Mountain College she studied alongside other well known artists such as Robert Rauschenberg who is one of my favorite artists. Much of Rockburnes work incorporates her enjoyment of astronomy and math.  This artwork Two Angels, 100 Years is quite similar to many of her other pieces which as stated before incorporate geometry and astronomy.  However Rockburne like many other artists has gone through different phases and style of art she creates.  Rockburne also enjoys experimenting with a great assortment of materials aside from the classics like canvas such as wrinkle-finish paint, tar, carbon paper, metal.  The piece Two Angels, 100 Years was made from 1984 – 1985 during the middle of Rockburnes career which slowed down around 2014.  Two Angels, 100 Years is constructed using two panels with the medium being oil and gold leaf on gessoed linen.  The general shape of the piece is one big equilateral triangle with half squares cut diagonally coming out of each point.  The way each half square is positioned creates a clockwise feeling giving the piece movement. The colors are mostly made up of multiple red and blue hues causing the piece to contain both warm and cool tones.   I chose Dorothea Rockburne Two Angels, 100 Years due to my ability to relate to the abstractness of the piece into my own paintings which use multiple panels as well.
