Integrative Seminar 2: Visual Culture – LP Cross-Course Reflection Post

LP Cross-Course Reflection Post

1) A description of the final project assignment for studio & seminar in your own words.

The final project assignment consisted of a studio portion and a seminar portion that would coincide with one another.  The seminar segment of the project required each student to research a topic they found interest in and would enjoy adapting into a studio project.  With all the research done then the student has to write a paper with 5-7 page minimum that included citations and footnotes linking to the resources the student used.  The student had to have 3-5 reliable resources with one being a scholarly source.  The studio project was also based around the same subject chosen for the research paper.  Each student had to envision themselves having an exhibition in either MOMA, MOMA PS1, or The Guggenheim.  The student had to go onto creating two or more proposals to present to the class and receive feedback on.  Once the final project proposal is chosen the student must make an example of their installation which can range from a model of the museum room or constructing the actual piece.  Each student also had to create a catalogue page that explained the main subject of the project and how the studio and seminar portions correlated.

4) A thorough & thoughtful Process Reflection for studio & seminar

I was able to work through my assignments for studio and seminar courses because of the fluidity of all assignments.  I found that in seminar many of the reading assignments introduced me to new ways of writing and our ideas about what proper writing is.  There was also a very strong crossover between the two classes in the sense that I felt both teachers were working together to make sure they were on the same page.  I am quite satisfied with my results from this semester in my studio and seminar even thought I had a rough patch in the middle.  Due to Kate and Nancy’s help I was able to work through the issues that were occurring and produce pieces of work that I was still proud of.  From my seminar class I will be able to take away a vast new way of thinking about writing standards and how helpful research can be to an art piece.  Much of my art is very fluid and doesn’t require much thinking in terms of concept however this assignment caused me to keep the main idea in the back of my mind.  From my studio class I will come away with a large amount of helpful critique on my artistic style and ideas of ways I could expand on some of my projects.  I was also introduced to many more mediums and methods of creating art such the rules project that restricted my creative ability.  Many of the projects from both classes I would like to develop into more elaborate pieces. The methods I used to create some of the projects in this class are similar to my other studio and time class.  On the other hand this class has made me question the common themes I find in my work and challenge them in a way I hadn’t thought about before.   This has opened my eyes to a vast variety of projects I can create that involve research because I love learning new things, even if they are completely random.  Much of my work from past classes focuses more on my identity being represented in art, but through this class I was able to focus on portraying someone else’s identity through my art.
