Integrated Design Studio 1 – October 24

For this assignment,

This is the place to put the link to your learning portfolio post. Your post should include:

  • Iteration 1: Isolate one of the key elements of your visual design vocabulary. Using that key element, draw something you see.
  • Iteration 2: Find two of your classmates drawings that also exemplify the key element you chose to highlight in your drawing. Photograph all three drawings and write a few words about the element you chose and how the drawings all embody your element.
  • Iteration 3:  Create a layout using all three drawings, your written text, and your visual vocabulary to guide you.
  • Your response to the following question:

Does it help you further define your visual vocabulary when you isolate similar elements in the work of others? Why or why not?

Iteration #1

For this iteration, I chose an object and drew it based on my visual vocabulary. I want my visual vocabulary to focus on elements of texture, line, and pointillism. It somewhat introduces these elements, but I want to make it the primary elements within my vocabulary.

As you can see, the image I created displays pointillism, texture, and line. Some other elements seen are depth and form. In relation to my classmates elements,

Iteration #2

For this iteration, I chose two other visual vocabulary drawings by my classmates that relate to my drawing iteration based on my visual vocabulary.

My two classmates Urvika and Maria utilized texture and line in their work. I appreciated the texture Maria created that looks similarly to the texture of wood, but on to the form of a water bottle. It makes me wonder what about texture influenced her design of this element. In reality, the water bottle has contrasting solid colors – purple, blue and yellow – but in this image you cannot see any of the smooth texture and color. Color is another aspect that I considered using more in my visual vocabulary, but sometimes I find that a piece is stronger without color added, it can distract from the piece itself at times. With my work I often utilize texture, layers, and depth which I view in the various lines thicknesses and the space of ink and negative space.
