Something I always see but never really acknowledge is the chess players in Union Square. The chess board pattern reminded me of my old coach’s tile in her kitchen and so I remade the image from memory.

The floor of the park is a honeycomb pattern. I never noticed it until it snowed for the first time and I almost slipped. When I think of honey, I think of bees which reminded me of a purse a saw someone wearing one day but could never find it anywhere. I painted that from memory.

I used the trees as inspiration for my third image. My question from this observation was “are these trees native to the area?” I connected that with nature and native. The opposite was man-made and alien. That is what I tried to convey.

The coverings of the subway station looked like the tops of a circus tent. This is funny to me because the 14th street station can be a circus itself sometimes. I painted a picture of a circus tent in response to this.

When I was exploring, I found a statue of Gandhi which I had never seen in all of my many visits to the park. I was curious about why it was so hidden. The word hidden to me connects to how celebrities hide in sunglasses. This is also a connection to what I think of when I think of Gandhi’s appearance. I always think about his glasses.
