Human extensions, Our connection to objects

This was our final memorial created by Eva, Oihana and I. The purpose of this project was to show how leaving your home and everything behind can be a tough batch on everyone’s life, as it was moving to Paris was. The memories of an idyllic life still haunt us to this very day. The emptiness of the new space, you now call home, reminds you of every piece of your story. In an attempt to reconstruct this ripped story, you try to grasp hopelessly these memories, in the shape of objects. Objects that now contain your essence and your past. Through the passing of time, you start to develop an unbreakable bond with the things that accompanied you through experiences in life. But when you leave them behind, is when you truly realize how much value they have for you. Our sentimental connection with inanimate objects, roots from our primary desire for comfort and protection, as a way of replacing a natural figure. Therefore, it is extremely appalling how we, as humans, connect at such emotional level with objects that are usually not unique and mass-produced. These have very different meanings and sentiments attached to them depending on its beholder. To further understand these abstract connections, as a group, we decided to research on the psychological roots of this behavior, on the history of human material connection to objects and research on artist works related to this field.
