Bridge 4: Process Post
“A Bag For My Grandmother – Dedicated To Alzheimer’s Patients”
- Final Design ProposalMy grandmother is an Alzheimer patient. She recently had an accident while finding something from her bag. Her bag had no compartments, which made all her belongings disorganized inside. Her regressive behaviors made it difficult to move her body freely. I am exploring factors that hinder Alzheimer patients to live normal lives. Moreover, asking myself why they need special, purposeful garments. I plan to make a garment that is light and wearable. Moreover, to store cellular phone, wallet, and note book. These items are essential for them to search their families when they get lost. It will be made out of denim. Shoulder strap will be added for those who cannot hold the bag. Inside of it, there will be two separate compartments. On the surface, there will be pocket with zipper to keep crucial items.

- Alzheimer patients lose their memories as time goes by. I depicted sadness and weariness by using blue and gray. The wrinkled fabrics symbolize distorted memories, as if they fading away.

- The images of swirling torrents are metaphor of memory loss.

- My main material will be denim, so I attached different kinds of them on my material board.

- These are my 50 elements that I collected for my look book. My interviewee, Ryan, gave me all the swatches she had for my work. Vivid, colorful fabrics gave me lots of great ideas to generate my work.

- These are the images that I documented during my Parsons archive visit. The black and white photo with topless female model overwhelmed me. I loved its decadent mood which later inspired my mood board. COMME des GARÇONS and Issey Miyake’s coutures gave me ideas how to “play” with my swatches.

- I decided to use various colors for my look book. I used blue, yellow, and black which represent Mormonism. I used two colors on each page to work as a color palette. I collaged my interviewee’s images on each page, then decorated with swatches. I punched the hole on the middle part of all the pages, then put red string in it. I wanted my work to be unique and quirky after binding it.

- I created my look book based on the interview with my friend, Ryann, who was a mormon. I used various colors to represent Mormonism, and my friend who has warm and bubbly personality.
