Response to Group Members Assignments
Michael – Self-Portrait Flowers – Michael’s use of live materials was interesting for this assignment. I thought that his explanation in class was creative and insightful.
Rei – Good Fellas Movie Poster – Rei focused on creating a deep analysis of her movie poster, and her explanation thoroughly explained all of her design decisions despite it being her first time using digital tools.
Sidney – Helium Balloon Project – I found this piece both challenging and intriguing because of the medium used. I had never before seen helium used as a medium and I thought that the overall message that she was focused on communicating was intriguing.
Fake As Strategy
A piece that I really resonated with me what the documentary Kumaré. Besides becoming one of my absolute favorites, it showed how fake can be used to create a belief system that is entirely made up but focused on your inner self. I found this extraordinarily interesting because a multitude of people took various approaches to the way that they believed his teachings. Kumaré used fake as a means to create an entirely fake religion, he was extremely successful in creating a new persona and was able to use a Hindu/Yogi inspired style of dress and tone of voice as a way to create his “best self.”
What became problematic was the ethics of what he was doing. It was hard to watch people buy so eagerly into his teachings knowing that they may or may not be angry or horrified after they discover that he was entirely a persona. Overall I thought that this documentary showed how fake can be used to create huge effects if executed properly.
