Materials used in this piece include charcoal paper, crimson acrylic paint, and images pulled from online. With this project, I wanted to highlight the negative and often deadly effects that transphobia and anti-trans politics holds on the trans community. The first image is juxtaposed with text from a bathroom law in Nevada, the second image is a quote from a police officer who was assigned to investigate the murder of a trans woman, the third is a quote from a trans-exclusionary radical feminist. The red is supposed to represent their blood. I wanted to incorporate text like legislature, but also text from everyday people, since this perpetuates negative stereotypes and stigma against trans women. With the second piece of text, I wanted to highlight the mistreatment trans women face by law enforcement, similar to the text in the first collage. I drew a lot of inspiration from different agitprop works, mostly ones I saw at the Brooklyn Museum. I was also especially inspired by Catherine Opie, and wanted to incorporate some of her style, hence using the blood red color – similar to her self portrait.
