History of Fashion Topic Choices

Image 1 – Margiela’s first collection (SS90)

I chose this image because I believe it is an iconic part of fashion history as Martin Margiela’s first collection. Details like the set design and using children in the show subverted the traditional model of a runway show. This show served as inspiration for the likes of Raf Simons and others. I believe the image conveys joy and freedom, and lets us get a peek into his first collection. I also chose this image because I am a big fan of Margiela and his aesthetic.

Image 2 – Gucci Campaign (1997)

This is a Gucci ad campaign run in a magazine shot by photographer Christian Witkin. This image is interesting to me because it perfectly captures the 90’s fashion trend of “heroin chic,” almost to a satirical degree. I think the image is very compelling in terms of the color palette chosen and the composition of the image. It quite literally looks like someone is high laying on a motel floor or something. However, I also think this ad campaign is very in-line with Tom Ford’s vision for Gucci as he was creative director at the time. I am interested in the “heroin chic” trend. Personally I like the aesthetics of it, such as colors used and the overall punk feel images categorized as this trend often have. However, I recognize the potential danger in promoting imagery like this, and wonder if it was a reflection of the times.

Image 3 – From Juergen Teller book “Go-sees” (1989-1999)

This image is taken from Juergen Teller’s book “Go-sees,” where Teller compiled images of models that were sent to him on a go-see. I find this image, as well as the book, interesting because it is a very personal portrayal of a model that is not typically featured in fashion imagery. I also chose it because I am a fan of Juergen Teller’s work, and like the clothing and color palette this person chose to wear.
