Bridge 1: Product Redesign

Glasses have helped people with impaired vision see for centuries but the design has relatively stayed the same for over two hundred years. The only thing that has changed throughout time is the aesthetic of glasses but there are still so many problems for a necessary item for a large population of people who rely on them and there should be a solution to keep the aesthetic developed throughout time but increase the comfort. As a glasses wearer myself, I have noticed how uncomfortable glasses can be when worn for long periods of time. Behind the ears is one place that gets the most irritated by glasses. Another problem I have noticed is that glasses can become very loose very easily and are need to be altered by a professional. Along with that problem is the fact that glasses often slip down, fall off or move around and impairs the wearer of seeing. This problem can disable the main purpose of glasses which is to help the user see. The only solution to this problem of slipping are ugly chains to keep them around your neck but even those don’t prevent glasses from slipping off your face. In my redesign, I will correct these common problems to enhance the wearer’s experience. To fix these issues I intend to change and add materials and a simple tool. I will be using rubber for the temples of the glasses because this is a lighter more flexible material to bend to the users liking. Also on the ear part of the temples, there will be removable and replaceable pads made out of foam padding for the for a more comfortable feel. Another enhancement I will make in my redesign is to create a crank for the screws. This crank will allow the user to tighten the glasses as needed. Another way to prevent slipping as well is to put an anti-slip material, like rubber, on the bridge to prevent the glasses from falling down the nose. This product is an everyday item for many people and is crucial as part of the medical system for some people to be able to see and by making it more comfortable glasses will seem like less of a chore to wear. Although there are solutions to these issues most of them are unflattering and as something meant to be worn daily they should be good looking. Glasses are often referred to as accessories and therefore part of the fashion system and if they are an outdated design and unfashionable and fewer people will be likely to use it and feel confident wearing glasses.
