Reading Reflection: Fetishism of Commodities

In Karl Marx work “The Fetishism of Commodities and the Secret Thereof” he discusses the relationship of commodities to social behaviors. Marx defines commodity as an object of value created through labor to satisfy human wants. He keeps coming back to the idea that commodities main goal of it is to satisfy human wants and without accomplishing this a commodity would be useless. Capitalism is based on commodities and without the need and want of these objects, it would collapse. Because of the need for these commodities, they have been put on a pedestal and have a social aspect to them. He also explains how money in which commodities are defined from is seen as mystical importance in a capitalist society. This aspect Marx refers to as Fetishism. This idea of money having this higher power is what makes commodities so valuable and almost worshipped. “The Fetishism of Commodities” was written 1860’s but could not be more relevant and seen in today’s society. In society, today people more than ever worship and value their devices and objects. With commodities like smartphones and computers and the rise of the number of people who have them, they have been objects that everyone wants and almost everyone has. This is the social aspect Marx talks about the more people covet these items the prices rise because of the demand of people who want them. This is the basis of capitalism in today society without people using and the demand of products being so high it would collapse.
